It used to be easy to visualize. Wealth lay in the land you owned, the food you grew and the factory you owned. Not any more. The next 100 years is going to be defined not by what we can see but what we can measure.
The Grid. A digital frontier. I tried to picture clusters of information as they moved through the computer. What did they look like? Ships? Motorcycles? Were the circuits like freeways? I kept dreaming of a world I thought I’d never see. And then one day . . .
We are historical beings. We see what we look for and we look for what we know. While we were focused on software making our phones smarter, our packages arrive faster and our entertainment better everything we did became a new nature resource. What is the word we use when harnessing a natural resource? We “exploit” it.
Every breath you take and every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take, I’ll be watching you
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay, I’ll be watching you
More or less. Data is an unblinking eye that is always watching us but, most importantly, cannot be seen. We cannot sense what data is collected from us nor how it is being used to change our behavior. Whether it is to watch another show, vote for a candidate or buy a suitcase online, data doesn’t work for us, it works for them.
